The girls and boys track and field team took to Cathcart Track in Flippin Fieldhouse for the Early Bird Invite. After only a very brief time training, the maroon and black matched up against nine visiting schools, with some returning veterans kicking off their season and some up and comers new to EHS track & field, kicking off their career.
TOP FINISHES FOR THE MAROON
Veteran team member Brianna Williams '18 got off to a great start to the season in the high jump, equalling her all-time best jump (4-6) and taking 1st place in the event. Patrick Zhou '20 continued the tradition of strong field events, taking 1st place in the Shot Put event to start the season.
Episcopal’s relay tradition is alive and well with both the boys and girls 4 x 400-meter relay teams, in the final event of the day, taking the top spot. Alli Boehm '20 and Claire Boehm '20 teamed up with Jahsaiah Moses '19 and Bijee Jackson '18 on the girls side and Sophomore sensation Jack Lee’s 52 second leg put Eli Gaines '20, James Dixon '19 and Zeddy Williams '21in top spots.
NEWCOMERS IMPRESS
There were plenty of student-athletes in the Maroon jersey for the first time and they all represented themselves very well and gave the coaches some high hopes for the future. Leading the way with impressive first-time performances was the debut of a trio of runners in the 800-meter as members of the 4 x 800-meter team. Alli Boehm ran the top time of the day with a 2:24.0 split to lead off the winning team, followed by Claire Boehm who put in a 2:27.0 in her first attempt at the 4 lap race. Senior leader Dawn Farquharson '18 stepped up to the 800-meter event and ran a very respectable 2:40.0. The boys 4x800-meter contingent had strong days with Williams running a solid opener to his EHS career (2:07) followed by impressive runs from fellow freshmen Kenny Driscoll '21 and Edward Powers '21.Scout Zhou '20 doubled that distance and really impressed the coaches with a gutsy performance and respectable time in the 1600-meter event.
In the sprint events, Jamall Mensah '20 established himself as a strong force for the program running an impressive 55-meter time to place 3rd in the final and coming back in the 300-meters to place 4th with his first sub 40-seconds of the year. Freshman Regan Simmons '21 was the top freshman in the girls 300-meters race and was followed closely by Maddie Blalock '19 who ran her personal best time in the first meet of the year.
VETERANS PUT IN THE WORK
Jon Grunau '19 got the nod to wear the Maroon jersey in the shotput and is looking forward to a standout season after a year under his belt. Team leaders Paige Hathaway '18 and Taylor Redd '18 ran strong times to lead the 4x800-meter contingent along with James Dixon '19 and Cam Robinson '19 on the boys side.
Nina Moore '20 and Litchfield Ajavon '19 were top returners in the short sprints and both put in solid performances to advance to the finals of the 55-meters where Ajavon finished in the runner-up spot. Also advancing to the final was John Pupel '19 and newcomer Juanell Walker '19.
The competition did not end on thursday, as all those who did not compete on Thursday were competed in the weekly time rials and there were many impressive performances on that day as well.
