This week, the girls' varsity basketball team was visited by ghosts of ISL opponents past, traveling first to St. Andrew's (MD) on Tuesday.
The talented Lions were hungry for a battle with the Maroon and quickly made use of their home court advantage at the opening tip. Sluggish defense and slow rotations gave St. Andrew's a number of uncontested layups, and the visiting team soon found itself in a 9-0 hole. After calling a quick timeout to settle and refocus, the squad slowly started to piece together a comeback. Solid rebounding by Sophie Singletary '18 and poised free throw shooting from Kailyn Shepherd '19 sparked a 12-4 late in the second quarter, capped by a Lexi Weger '18 three-pointer as the buzzer sounded. Going into the locker room, Episcopal trailed by just a point.
Like all good teams do, the Lions came out roaring in the second half, but this time, their efforts were met with equal ferociousness from their opponent. Ryan Shepherd '21 utilized her quickness to knock down a pull-up jumper and subsequent free throw to give the Maroon their first lead of the game. Although things remained close down the stretch, Erin Phillips '18 solidified the game by hitting Weger with a gorgeous baseline bounce pass that led to a quick basket. St. Andrew's was forced to throw up an unsuccessful shot as the seconds dwindled, and EHS found itself on the winning end of a 40-37 score as the final buzzer sounded.
