The boys’ varsity basketball team opened the 2017-18 season by participating in the Sleepy Thompson Invitational at St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School.
This is a terrific tournament with very talented teams from across Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Episcopal has enjoyed recent success at this prestigious event, winning the tournament championship in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2015. After only eleven practice sessions, and with a week-long holiday break mixed in, the team faced a tough challenge in this year’s event. The young men on this team showed great ability, athleticism, and mental toughness to win three games in as many days to capture the 2017 Sleepy Thompson Tournament Championship.
In the opening round of the tournament on Thursday, the Maroon faced Friendship Collegiate from Washington, D.C. Friendship boasts a guard-heavy lineup, and they like to play a fast-paced brand of basketball. Despite giving up an open three-point field goal to Friendship Collegiate after the opening tip, the Maroon dominated the opening eight minutes of play. Stifling defensive pressure forced our opponents in to bad shots and turnovers, and EHS led 26-12 at the end of the first quarter. The second period was more of the same, and EHS led at the half by a score of 50-23. The team once again was firing on all cylinders in the third quarter, and the Maroon extended the lead after holding their opponents to just 4 points over an eight minute span of play. In the final quarter, all fourteen players on the team saw action in the game, and EHS secured the victory. The final score was 81-37.
