Girls Varsity Basketball Shows Toughness in Win Over Collegiate
The girls' varsity basketball team earned a crucial VISAA victory at Collegiate, ending a grueling stint of seven practices and three games in six days. With the win, the squad improves to 3-0 on the year.
Despite the long bus ride (and even longer week), EHS was determined to set the tone early and fight for a road win. Collegiate, with a trio of impressive slashing guards, had every intention of protecting their home court, though, and took advantage of their quickness on the perimeter early on. The Cougars jumped out to an early 5-0 run, but Episcopal answered back with a Kailyn Shepherd '19 three-point play and Sophie Singletary '18 layup. The Maroon knocked down several big buckets in the first half, but Collegiate continued to respond, sinking a pair of triples and several athletic layups to frustrate the visitors. Shepherdhelped the squad extend their marginal lead in the closing minutes of the second quarter with back-to-back jumpers, and EHS hit the locker room with a slight 26-22 edge.
The third stanza was more of the same, as the teams continued to scrap for the lead. After Shepherd and Lexi Weger '18 netted two unanswered buckets, the Cougars intensified their defensive pressure and retaliated with 8-0 run to bring the teams within one. It was at this moment that senior captain Erin Phillips '18 decided she had had enough. Phillips used her powerful vocal chords to command the defense and apply pressure to our opponent's scoring opportunities. She also made herself a scoring threat, converting off of incredibly athletic passes from Weger and Dymin Gerow '20.This was just the spark the team needed to close out the contest. Episcopal showed poise and unity in the final minutes of the game and, together, solidified the decisive 53-45 victory.
