Under rainy skies, the Episcopal High School girls' varsity soccer team took to the home pitch for their season opener versus Elizabeth Seton. The action was intense from the opening whistle as both teams struggled to control the ball in wet conditions. As they settled in to a rhythm, the home side succeeded in keeping the ball on the ground and changing the point of attack, resulting in several opportunities. In the 25th minute, Millie Pettegrew '20 slotted a well placed through ball to Katherine Allen '20 who quickly took one touch and beat the Seton goalkeeper. This 1-0 lead was fragile as the visitors poured on the pressure with several direct balls in to the EHS defensive third. In the closing minutes of the first half, a powerful strike came from the right half, beating the EHS goalkeeper and tying the game as the match went in to halftime.
In the second half, EHS showed sparks of brilliance as they tested the visiting goalkeeper numerous times. The Seton offense was able to pull ahead in the 63rd minute with another powerful strike on goal. The home side battled to the 80th minute, but to no avail as the visitors were able to hold off their efforts. Solid play from center backs Lilly Wilcox '18 and Trudy Holmes '18 was notable in this contest, and midfielders Sophie Singletary '18 and Logan Tyler '19 showed great determination and work ethic in the center of the pitch.
EHS travels to Bishop McNamara for their first of three away contests on Friday 9/817.
