The boys and girls track and field teams started out the 2017 campaign in fine form showing well at the Maroon & Black Relays on Cathcart Track in Flippin Fieldhouse.
The girls’ squad were led by newcomer Tiffany Stowers ‘20 who took 1st place honors in the Shot Put event in just her second competition in this event. Just 1 inch behind her was veteran sprinter Zibah Oyibo ‘17 who has added to her repertoire of events where she can help The Maroon this season. Multi event specialist Bijee Jackson ‘18 also took first place in the 55-meter hurdles running an all-timer personal best time and now the top ranked hurdler in the VISAA rankings. Jackson didn’t end her day over the hurdles, competing and scoring valuable team points in the Shot Put, 4 x 200-meter and 4x400-meter events.
Relay races took center stage for this competition with a series of relays contested against 11 visiting schools. The girls 4x200-meter relay team of Nina Moore ‘20, Oyibo, Jackson and Dawn Farquharson’s ‘18 fastest split of the day took 1st place in a season best time followed about another EHS team of Claire Boehm ‘20, Esi Igyan ‘18, Jahsaiah Moses ‘19 and Alli Boehm ‘20 who placed a closed second. Freshman speedster Moore continued to torch the track with another personal best performance in the 55-meters as well.
The girls distance squad put in some strong performances for the team as well led by senior leader Abigael Ajuma ‘17 who had the top 800-meter split of the day in the 4 x 800m along with teammates Camden Alford ‘17, Taylor Redd ‘19 and Belle Dixon ‘19 to place 4th place in this event. Newcomer Charlotte Breckenridge ‘20 who anchored the Sprint Medley Relay team of Paige Hathaway ‘18, Logan Tyler ‘19 and Maddie Blalock ‘19 also had a impressive debut after some great improvements in training.
The final race of the day was one of the top results for the Maroon with newcomers Claire Boehm ‘20 and Alli Boehm ‘20 joining veterans Jackson and Farquharson to place Runner up in the 4 x 400-meter relay.
On the boys side, the Maroon had some top performances from some returning veterans and some promising results from some of our hardworking new talent. Veteran Litchfield Ajavon ‘19 took first place in the 55-meter hurdles followed by Sergio Portobanco ‘18 who worked through a sub-par day to still take 1st place in the High Jump event. Sam Kamara ‘19 led the sprint contingent with a strong performance in the 55-meters followed closely by workhouse teammate Jonathan Sutherland ‘17 who had the fastest 200-meter split on the day to anchor the Runner Up finishing 4x200-meter relay. Senior captain Duncan Trau ‘17 put in an inspired performance to anchor his team's 4x200-meter relay to take 1st place in their heat and 5th place overall.
Strengthening the long tradition of strength in the field events, Freshman Elijah Gaines ‘20 laid down the fastest 400m split on the day and also placed in the long jump event. The boys’ shot put crew took 4 of the top 7 spots in the Shot Put event with Chris Fournier ‘17 leading the way in 2nd place, followed closely by teammates Tola Banjoko ‘18 (3rd), Colin Dixon ‘17 (4th) and Bill Milton ‘17 (7th).
The distance squad put in some top times as well led by rookie Thanos Androus ‘20 who put up the top 800-meter split of the day (2:16.1) followed by returning veteran Charlie Tarbutton ‘18 in 2:19. Tarbutton and Androus were joined by Cameron Robinson ‘19 and Meron Tekeste ‘19 to take 7th in the 4x800-meter event.
