JV lacrosse leaps over Frogs for big win

On May 3, the girls' JV lacrosse team took the field against a spirited Maret squad. The Fighting Frogs were not deep in numbers, but their team included several quick and talented players. The Maroon put forth a strong team effort with many players stepping up in key moments of the team’s 10-3 victory.
With the weather sunny, hot, and humid, the coaches used an active substitution plan and platooned three strong groups at midfield who earned a solid advantage in draw controls. This large group of midfielders included Caroline Schmidt '21, Charlotte Breckenridge '20, Sophie Broll '21, Isabel Schneider '21, Caroline Ulrich '20, Hadley Applegate '22, and Lucy Schmactenberger '21 — all of who battled aggressively for ground balls and moved the ball well in transition. Once the ball made its way to the offensive end of the field, the Maroon showed a fair amount of patience and took advantage of effective passing to open up close shooting opportunities. Several players contributed to a balanced scoring attack, including Nina Thompson '22, Catherine MacKinnon '21, Hadley Applegate '22, Isabel Schneider '21, Liv Hunt '21, and McClain Brooks '21. Maggie Hulkower '21, Annie Durden '22, Hadley Foulk '21, Annie Caine '22, and Caroline Jones '20 added a calming presence with their control of the ball in the offensive end and their feeds to the crease.

Once again the team’s stalwart defense put significant pressure on Maret’s offense, who never seemed to settle into a groove. On the defensive end of the field, the coaches’ platooning strategy to substitutions also kept the group rested and aggressive. Many of the team’s defenders had important forced turnovers and key ground balls as they showed composure with their clearing passes. The Frogs struggled to escape the relentless play of Jane Durden '20, Sunny Miller '20, Maggie Mattox '20, Haley Dod '20, Caroline Bradford '21, Nelle Bashinsky '22, Patsy Daum '22, and the surprise additions to the defense Gigi Friedman '21 and Sophie Broll '21. Anchoring this impressive defensive effort was the outstanding goalie play of guest keeper, Britney Parkinson '21 who stepped into the cage for Liza Ryan '20 and tallied eight saves.
