EHS Track & Field lined up on Saturday February 9th for the annual Hoxton Invitational in Flippin Fieldhouse’s Cathcart Track. Twelve teams from the DC Metro area battled for the team competition and also testing out their final speed and strength heading into the State Championships. To top it off, the Maroon broke several School records.
With a Nationals qualifying standard on Cathcart Track being the clear goal for the day, the sprint medley relay team of Nina Moore '20, Caroline Panton '21, Jahsaiah Moses '19, and Alli Boehm '20 were racing against the clock, hoping to dip under the 4:19 qualifying standard. Moore handed off to Panton as they ran side by side with a strong Potomac squad. Moses put down her all-time best 400-meter time in her final trip around Flippin Fieldhouse to hand off to Alli Boehm, who needed to run close to her personal record to clinch the qualifying spot. She cruised around the track and came home, stopping the clock at 4:14.15—punching a ticket to the New Balance Nationals in New York City in March.
If one qualifying time wasn’t enough, the Girls 4x400-meter team took to the track with some tired legs in the final race of the day. Claire Boehm '20 led off running a tactical first leg and putting the team in striking distance to take top spot. Alli Boehm was able to jam in another top relay time to get the girls on track for another qualifying time for the Eastern States Championships, also held in New York City. Janil Cohen '21 took the baton and had an inspired breakthrough race to put the team into first place with veteran superstar Jahsaiah Moses'19 floating through and running a season best time—this got her a spot on the Armory Track in a few weeks.
Claire Boehm continues to re-write the School's record books, this time in the 1600-meters. She left the field behind after two laps and had an amazing display of pace and power to stop the clock at 5:18.04, chopping eight seconds off of her personal best time and her own school record.
It became a personal-record bonanza, as seven runners hit their personal best times in the 400-meters. Cohen ran a huge leg on the 4x4. Ever-reliable Sydney Lewis '19 is in top shape heading into the crew boats this spring and putting in two 400’s on two different relays. Ruby Gregg '21 had a PR double, running a personal best time in the 200-meter leg of the sprint medley relay and a crowd-pleasing 400-meter leg on the 4x4 where she ran down another runner to take them at the line.
The girls 800-meter squad had a day on the track with four personal records and one season best time over four laps. Alli Boehm ran her all-time best indoor split followed by Regan Simmons '21, who chopped nine seconds off of her best time. Liza Gregory '21 continues to get faster and faster each week. Team veteran Charlotte Breckenridge '20 came alive in her final lap to run a personal best time, followed by Natalie Block’s '19 season best time. Nelle Bashinsky '22 was just off her best time in her inaugural season.
Carmela Ribadeneira '21 held things down in the field events for the Maroon, jumping a personal record in the triple jump and also placing 4th in the high jump event.
