The boys crew team got off to a good start at their first regatta of the season, the Occoquan Challenge. The boys were racing against mostly club teams, which are made up of the all-stars from the local high schools in the area.
This regatta features a 180-degree turn about halfway through the course, which presents a huge challenge to rowers and coxswains alike. EHS fielded two boats, an 8 and a 4, both racing in the Upper Junior Category, and both completed their race in respectable time. The 8, including stroke Hays Talley '21, Red Staunton '22, Garrott Braswell '19, Thomas Adkins '20, Hunter McGuire '19, Chris Kim '21, Davis Alley '22, Stefan Olsen '21 and coxswain Brennan Eberle '22, finished in 9th of 11 with a time of 17:23.68.
The 4, having lost stroke Harrison Wise '21 to a wrist injury earlier in the week, competed with stroke Talley, Archer Staunton '19, McGuire, Red Staunton, and coxswain Olsen. Under brutal humidity and heat, they finished in 13th of 13, with a time of 18:56.48. That was an excellent showing, considering that three of the rowers and the coxswain had raced in the 8 only two hours earlier.
