Girls Crew Victorious at the Charlie Butt Regatta

The girls crew team traveled into Washington, D.C., this weekend to race in the Charlie Butt Regatta on the Potomac River. EHS rowed in the 1st, 2nd, Junior and Novice fours events.
The final for the 2nd four quickly became a two-boat race for first place. EHS and West Potomac moved away from the trailing crews as they rowed under Key Bridge (the halfway point). As the lead crews entered the last 500 meters, West Potomac found another gear and opened the margin over EHS, who placed second.

The novice four rowed well in the finals finishing second behind Yorktown. The boat rowed their highest stroke rating of the season. At practice this week, this crew will be working on the synchronizing the catches and finishes as they prepare for their championship regatta.

The first four clashed oars with another boat shortly after the start of their final. The race was stopped and all crews returned to the starting platform. On the second attempt of the start, all crews got off the starting platform cleanly, and EHS settled into third place behind Stone Bridge and West Potomac. This four struggled to find their rhythm during the first 1000 meters of the race. The closing 20 strokes of the race were better, but the margins between EHS and the lead two crews were too large to overcome and this crew finished third.

The junior four was the only crew who had to advance to the finals through a heat. This boat did not need to sprint in the heat, winning comfortably. In the finals, the coaching staff was impressed with the technical improvements and the consistency throughout the entire race. The speed monitor that was placed in the boat indicated a more steady pace - fewer spikes and dips in speed. Under the guidance of coxswain, Arden Faires '19, the junior four replicated their performance from the heat and placed first - winning by eight seconds over the crew from Rock Ridge. It was a blue-ribbon performance for this crew!
