Varsity Softball Defeated by St. Catherine's

The Girls Varsity Softball Team played in their first game of the season against St. Catherine’s.
The girls started off strong in the first inning of the game. Tiffany Stowers '20 was on the mound and struck out the first two batters. The second batter was thrown out by our catcher, Barrett Carney '19, who made a great heads-up play on a drop third strike. Then our first baseman, Halsey Ziglar '19 sealed the inning with a nice out on a routine grounder. At bat in the first, Madi Register '18 made solid contact on a single to center field, and recorded our first hit of the season. Unfortunately, Register was left on base as St. Catherine’s center fielder made a tough catch on Stower’s hard hit line drive to the outfield. Ziglar tried to start a 2-out rally in the second inning with a nice single to get her on base. Kayla Murphy '18 went in for Ziglar as a pinch runner and used her speed to steal second base on a badly thrown ball, but she was left on base as St. Catherine’s managed to get the last out of the inning. The next few innings proved to be tough as St. Catherine’s continued to put hits together and eventually scored 12 runs in 6 innings. Many of those hits were hard hit balls that traveled between infielders to our outfield. Fortunately, center fielder Lilly Wilcox '18 was able to make critical plays that kept some of the runners from advancing, and left fielder Judy Liu '18 did a great job backing up throws to third base to keep runners from scoring.

Despite the 0-12 loss, the girls remained positive with the help of encouraging words from our Co-Captains, Liu and Wilcox.
