Varsity Girls Win Two Titles in EHS Invitational Squash Tournament
More than 200 players, coaches, parents, students, and other spectators filled Goodman Squash Courts for an action-packed day of squash matches at the EHS Invite. For the girls’ tournament, Episcopal hosted the top seven players representing seven other schools from the Mid-Atlantic region including Roland Park, Mercersburg, Potomac, St. Andrew’s, Bryn Mawr, St. Catherine’s, and National Cathedral.
The individual tournament consisted of seven main flights from Girls I to Girls VII and included consolation rounds. In the Girls’ III Flight, Karla Domingues ’20 (#3) played extremely well in winning her flight with a 3-0 record in matches played. Team Captain Sabrina Teope ’18 (#5), playing her last squash tournament as a four-year member of the GVSQ team, had a bye in the first round and convincingly won the Girls’ V Flight finals. Both Mac Faughnan ’19 (#2) and Pierson Gammage ’20 (#4) reached the finals of the Girls’ II and Girls’ IV flights before falling to tough opponents. Nicole Carino ’19 (#1) and Trudy Holmes’19 (#7) made it to the semifinals of Girls’ I and Girls’ VII flights, losing to the eventual flight winners. Holmes proved her resilience by winning 3rd place, coming from behind to win 3-2 in a thrilling match after losing the first two games.
Seven non-playing members of the GVSQ team - Margaret Collett ‘18, Isabelle Holt ’18, Lily Schmactenberger ‘19, Colby Grover ‘19, Jonesy Wilbanks ’19, Lilly Whitner ’19, and Lily Dolan ’20- helped to organize and run the tournament.
