Boys Basketball Wins Overtime Thriller Against Bullis
The boys' varsity basketball team hosted the Bullis Bulldogs in an important IAC contest.
Bullis came in to the game tied for first place in the league, and EHS was in the middle of the pack. The first half was eerily similar to the first game between these two teams in January, and although EHS played well in the first period, the Bulldogs completely controlled the second quarter. Bullis was dominant in the closing minutes of the first half, and Episcopal was down 10 points, 33-23, at the break. During the halftime meeting, Episcopal players and coaches discussed the similarities that had occurred in the first half of both games, but we were committed to playing a different style of basketball in the second half.
The players were reinvigorated during the third quarter, and they were able to cut the Bulldog lead to three points. The final quarter of regulation was a back-and-forth affair, and at one point the Maroon found themselves with a small lead. Bullis would fight back, and regain the lead, but that was short-lived. Inspired play by some of the veteran players provided EHS with the spark the team needed, and after four quarters of play the game was tied at 59.
Overtime began with a perfectly executed "jump ball" play that led to an EHS lay-up to start the extra session. Bullis answered on their first possession, and this game seemed like it would go down to the wire. Foul trouble began to mount for the Maroon, and Bullis took advantage of this and got to the free throw line four times late in the game. As fouls continued to mount, EHS found themselves playing the final minute of the game without three starers because they fouled out of the game. With the scored tied at 68, Bullis had the ball with about 15 seconds on the clock, and it seemed like they would get the last shot.
On the in-bounds play, the Maroon's defense forced a turnover, and after gaining possession EHS called their final timeout of the game. The play was drawn up with two different options; as the ball was put in to play, the Bulldogs thwarted the first option, but quick thinking by the Maroon ball-handler allowed a chance with the second option, a ball-screen and attack to the middle of the court. As the Bulldog defense collapsed on the dribbler, a pass was made to Bryan Peterson '18, who calmly stepped to the basket and connected on a layup just before time expired. The Maroon won the game in dramatic fashion by a score of 70-68.
