Girls Varsity Squash Team Wins Classic Plate Title at US High School Nationals

The top eight squash players went to Philadelphia for the 2018 HEAD U.S. High School Team Squash Championships.  With over 180 boys’ and girls’ teams from around the country and 1300+ players, the tournament has become the largest of its kind in the world.
Episcopal played all four of its team matches at the historic Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia. The club has played an important role in the history of squash and tennis, hosting numerous national championships in both sports going as far back as the late 19th century. For the weekend, the team played four matches, won three of them, and the Classic Plate title for Girls’ III while finishing 5th overall.

In the opening match against Westminster School (CT) on Friday afternoon, the team scored a decisive 6-1 victory. In the next round on early Saturday morning, pitted against a tough opponent from Hopkins School (CT), the team put up a brave fight without its #4 player. Players ranked #5 through #8 moved up one slot and competed hard before falling 1-6. The same afternoon, the girls collectively played its most impressive team match of the squash season against Rye Country Day School (NY) and won 7-0. In the Classic Plate Finals - one which the team had also won in 2017 - against Winsor School (MA) on Sunday afternoon, it triumphed 6-1. After the match, Assistant Squash Coach for Winsor, Helen Grassi '03, referred to the EHS girls as a “very talented squash team.”

For the weekend tournament, Lindsey Harrison ’19 (#6) and Pierson Gammage '20 (#4) finished with perfect 4-0 and 3-0 records in matches played. Karla Domingues ’20 (#2), Mac Faughnan '19 (#3), and Team Captain Sabrina Teope ’18 (#5) all won 3 out of 4 matches. Nicole Carino '19 (#1) played some brilliant squash while finishing 2-2, as did Lilly Whitner '19 (#7). As the alternate, Jonesy Wilbanks '19 (#8) moved up one slot to play against a higher-seeded player before losing her only match.

For the 2017-18 season, the team finished 11-3, once again the best W-L record in the MASO Squash League.
