Maroon Track & Field Breaks Personal Records at Home Meet

Flippin Fieldhouse has been host to many, many competitions and on Thursday January 25, 2018 Cathcart Track was host to one of the biggest meets of the year. 12 teams and 635 athletes competing in 3.5 hours was a chance for 80 of those competitors to wear the Maroon & Black of the Episcopal Track & Field team.
FIRST TO THE FINISH
The Episcopal hurdlers had a strong day taking 1st place in both the boys and girls events. Litchfield Ajavon '19 continued his undefeated record on Cathcart Track and Bijee Jackson '18 cleared the field by five meters to take first place. Following them close behind were John Pupel '18 who finished runner up in a new personal record and second in the girls race was Brianna Williams '18 with her season best time.

Senior leader Vincent Notzon '18 had a busy day, placing first in the high jump event in a season best jump , taking third place in the Long Jump and also running on the 4 x 400-meter relay team. Brianna Williams '18 clinched the high jump first place slot while jumping the highest she has ever jumped. Patrick Zhu '20 took his second victory of the season in the shot put, followed closely by teammates Leo McCray '19, Jon Grunau '19, Taylor Burns '19 and David Zeng '20.

The boys team saved one of their best races for last, winning the 4 x 400-meter in convincing fashion. Freshman Zeddy Williams '21 led off and passed the baton to James Dixon '19 who had a career day running a personal record in the 500-meter and ran his best time in the 400-meters on the relay. Notzon ran a composed race and handed off to Cameron Robinson '19 who ran a personal best time over 400-meters to hold off the final challenger and take first in the last race of the day.

ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS
There were a number of students-athletes who ran their best time ever on a day that they were expected to be at their best. The distance squad was led by Alex Keller '19 who ran a personal best time in the 500-meter event along with Stuart Thornton '18 and Geordie Hendricks '19 who both ran gutsy races and ran right through the finish. Claire Boehm '20 ran a gutsy race after some sporadic training the past few weeks and ran herself into the Top Five State Rankings over the 500-meter distance. After Boehm it was a personal best showcase with teammates Lindy Moss '19, Natalie Block '19, Catie Medick '19, Esther Kim '19 and Olivia Armfield '20 all running their best time.
 
Moving up to the 800-meter distance, Tre Simmons '20 had a career day running on the 4 x 800-meter posting his all time best time in the 4 lap race. Edward Powers '21 ran a personal best by close to 10 seconds as well. On the girls side, fearless leader Taylor Redd '18  shepherded teammates Charlotte Breckenridge '20 to her best time by over 10-seconds and Missy Brandt '20 had a stellar day as well notching a new best time after some hard work this season.

The sprint brigade also had some newcomers run some impressive times and some veterans get some solid competition. Salim Turner-Muhammad '19 and Juanell Walker '19 ran personal bests on the season over 55-meters, as they continue to get faster and faster each race. Barry Curtis '19 had the fastest time in the 300-meter event which had 10 entries from EHS. Bear Matheson '20 also put in a top performance in the 300-meters in just his first competition in the Maroon & Black jersey. Nina Moore '20 had an impressive day in the 300-meters running her all-time best in the event after some tough training so far this season. Rookie standout Regan Simmons '21 also ran a solid race to run her best time this season. The 300-meters was a fantastic day for the Maroon with 18 entries in this event and 17 personal or season’s best times--one performance just missed a previous best by .6 seconds!
