Girls Take Top Five Spots in Climbing Meet, Boys Fall to WFS
The 12 varsity climbers adventured down to Orange, Va., to face rivals Woodberry Forest and the Foxcroft School in what is perennially the most exciting meet of the season.
Woodberry’s home bouldering cave is tall, tight, and loud but fills with competitors who are eager to show off and build each other up. Unlike many sports, the camaraderie between climbers is apparent, and everyone takes the approach of climbing against the routes not each other. This leads to some amazing climbing and some very strong scores.
Because the gym is so small, the boys went first while the girls waited for their turn. It was a close match, with EHS and WFS boys trading up V3 and V4 climbs back and forth for V5’s and V6’s. In the end, the chalk dust settled to a neck-and-neck scoresheet check. Paul Pivirotto ’19 and Kidron Kollin ’19 tied the top Tiger for first place with 32 points each. Collin Fitzpatrick ’19 earned the third best score of 26 for a tie for 5th place. Thomas Adkins ’20 earned 22 for a 9th place tie and the fifth-best score. Bobby Hood ’19 earned the last scoring spot on varsity with 18. Rob Deaton ’20 had a strong day, but his sixth score of 15 was dropped. After we totaled the tally, the Woodberry senior-heavy team just squeaked by with a 134–130 victory over the Maroon.
Next up were the varsity girls against new-to-the-league Foxcroft. Gracie Guest ’19 earned the top spot with 26 points, also tying the third best score of the day in the boys’ meet. Mei Kuo ’19 and Juliet Faris ’19 each earned a strong 22 for a second place tie. Arden Faires ’19 scored 20 for fourth. Lilly Wilcox ’18 rounded out the varsity points with 18 and a tie for fifth. Their scores meant the EHS girls swept the top five places in the meet–an outstanding feat. Jane Owen ’19 had 16 to be the dropped score for the day. Nettie Webb ’18 traveled with the team and was able to climb just for fun, but still scored a strong 18. The girls more than doubled up Foxcroft, winning 108–52.
