Maroon Falls to Little Hoyas

The boys varsity basketball team hosted the Little Hoyas from Georgetown Prep for an important I.A.C. match-up.
Both teams entered the contest at 2-0 in the league, and ranked in the Top 10 in the Washington Post. The first quarter was impressive, and both teams played at a high-level on both ends of the floor. Offense, and particularly transition offense, proved to be the most impressive part of the opening period. At one point EHS held a double-digit lead over the Little Hoyas, but the visiting team closed the gap and Episcopal only led Georgetown Prep by a score of 25-23 after eight minutes of play. The game settled a bit in the second quarter, and both teams had a heavier focus on defense and rebounding. The Maroon were able to increase the lead, but both teams were playing well. At the break, Episcopal led Georgetown Prep 38-33.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair for the first few minutes, and neither team would back down from the aggressive play on the court. Episcopal did falter late in the quarter, and fatigue began to be a factor for the Maroon. Georgetown Prep ended the quarter on a nice run, and they actually took the lead, 57-56, at the end of the third period. Georgetown Prep scored the first two baskets of the final period, and it looked as though EHS was running out of steam; but the Maroon made a run of their own, and they took the lead back with five minutes to play, 62-61. Unfortunately, the final part of the game was all Georgetown Prep. Episcopal suffered on offense as they went through a long scoring drought, and the three Division I signees that play for the Little Hoya's were able to score too easily against a tired and frustrated Maroon defense. Some late game fouling and costly mistakes by Episcopal allowed Prep to end the game on a strong run, and the visitors eventually prevailed by a final score of 78-62. EHS is now 12-3, 2-1 in league play.
