Girls Varsity Squash Coasts to 8-1 Win Over Bryn Mawr

During what has been the coldest winter spell over the past two weeks in the Washington, DC area since 1989, Baltimore’s Bryn Mawr School visited EHS for the home opener this squash season.
The first round of matches began on a high note for the home team. Mac Faughnan ’19 (#3), Jonesy Wilbanks ’19 (#7), and Isabelle Holt ‘18 (#9) all cruised to 3-0 wins, even as several of the individual games were quite close. Sabrina Teope ’18(#4) and Lilly Whitner ‘19 (#6) came up against tough opponents, with Sabrina eventually prevailing 3-1 and Lily narrowly losing 1-3.

Leading 4-1 and needing only one more win to clinch the overall team match, EHS continued its strong, focused, and determined play. Karla Domingues ’20 (#2), Lindsey Harrison ’19 (#5), and Trudy Holmes ‘19 (#8) played their best squash of this young season. Karla cruised to an easy 3-0 win, while both Trudy and Lindsey had to dig down deep to eventually come up on top 3-1. The short-handed Bryn Mawr team had graciously agreed to play five exhibition matches just to accommodate Episcopal’s larger squad. Both Janie Stillwell ’18 (#10) and Margaret Collett ’18 (#11) competed hard before falling 0-2 to higher-seeded opponents.

The final round of matches saw Nicole Carino ‘19 (#1) sealing the 8-1 team win in three straight games. The three remaining exhibition matches saw Lily Dolan ’20 (#13) playing extremely well in winning 2-0 and Lilly Schmactenberger ’19 (#12) coming up a bit short 1-2 in games. In what was the most exciting and final match of the day, with teammates and spectators cheering her on, Colby Grover ’19 (#14) battled her Bryn Mawr opponent through three very close games, fighting hard for every single point before losing 1-2.
