Boys Varsity Basketball Wins Sleepy Thompson Tournament on SSSAS Turf

In front of a raucous and standing-room-only crowd on Saturday evening, the Maroon faced the Sleepy Thompson Tournament host, and cross-town rival, St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes in the Championship game.
The environment was electric, and the Maroon student section gave the team a boost as their “6th Man.” EHS had an awesome start to the game, and the defensive intensity set the tone. EHS raced out to an early lead which led the home team, the Saints, to call a quick timeout. The defense was great throughout the first quarter, and the Maroon led 12-6. The scoring for both teams picked up in the second quarter with 44 combined points being put on the board in the period. It looked as though St. Stephen’s may have some momentum going into the half, but a three-point make just before the buzzer, and just past half-court, by Asa Shannon ‘19, put the Maroon fans into a frenzy and EHS led at the half 38-24.

St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes have a very talented team, and we knew that they would make a run in the second half. In the third period, they did just that; the Saints held EHS to only 7 points in the third period, and some “red-hot” perimeter shooting from the home team allowed them to cut the lead to just three points heading into the final period of the tournament. The Saints were knocking on the door throughout the final eight minutes of the game, but Episcopal was able to make winning plays both on offense, and defense. The Maroon played with great passion in the fourth quarter, and some good free throw shooting down the stretch helped the team secure the victory. The final score was 59-51, and the Maroon improved to 3-0 this season.

The following players were selected to the Sleepy Thompson All-Tournament Team:
Tymu Chenery '20
Asa Shannon '19
Xavier Johnson '19 (Most Valuable Player)
