Cross Country Team Finishes Season at VISAA State Championships
On bitter cold and blustery day, Episcopal runners finished out their season at the VISAA State Championships on Woodberry's challenging hilly course.
In the Division 1 Boys race, Tre Simmons '20 and Zeddy Williams '21 got out fast with a big pack of runners and maintained their position throughout the race. Simmons ran well to secure 16th place overall and All-State honors. He was also one of the top two sophomores in the race. Williams finished 29th overall in the field of 200 runners and was also the second freshman to cross the finish line.
Rounding out the top five scoring positions were Ben Korkowski '19, Rohan Candadai '18, and Chris Denning '19. Candadai set a season best time, while Denning was one second off his personal best.
Alex Brown '18, Scout Zhou '20, Rob Deaton '20, Chineme Agulanna '20, and Flynn Donnelly '21 all ran strong to complete the team finish. Zhou and Donnelly both ran personal bests to close out their impressive first season of EHS cross country.
The team took 13th overall with 323 points besting local teams Potomac and St. Stephen's & St. Agnes.
In the Division 1 girls race, all girls got out fast and pushed through the first mile in the middle of the pack. Dawn Farquharson '18 finished first for the Maroon in 82nd place, while first-year runner Charlotte Breckenridge '20 finished close behind in 84th place.
Completing team scoring were Regan Simmons '21, Guen Dunstan '18, and Olivia Tucker '19. Judy Liu '18, Karen Zhang '20, and Esther Kim '19 all ran well despite the dropping temperature and increasing wind. The team finished 14th overall with 407 points.
The coaches are proud of the team's work ethic and positive attitude this year. Go High School!
