This past Friday, something #lit a fire in the hearts of the young JHockey team.
The coaches aren't sure whether it was the pre-game dance party competition, the awesome weather, the intense week of Burch, or the inspirational varsity game that preceded the JV Field Hockey match against Madeira. Whatever the reason, all were excited to see the squad come together for a great game.
The competition started out with evenly matched back and forth play, and the middies -- led by Lindsay Veatch '20, Yareni Murillo '20, and Caroline Jones '20 -- held their own against the Madeira Snails. Captain McClain Brooks '21 played a new position, excelling on the defensive line where Sophie Novitsky also played with controlled and smart moves, shutting down the opponent's offensive players. As a team, The High School did a much better job of marking up as the game went on, so Madeira was only able to score one goal.
Offensively, the Maroon improved with each minute and spent most of the second half in their offensive end of the 25, earning several corners due to Madeira's penalties. After several attempts to create that #thud on the back of the cage, the JHockey players rallied for their first goal of the season as Gigi Friedman '21 sent a beautiful cross over to Jackie Lukes '21 who got low and ready on the post.
The game ended in a tie and a celebration of the strong play from each and every player.
