Maroon Volleyball Holds Fast against NCS

On Thursday, the EHS varsity volleyball team opened up its season with an ISL match against NCS. Historically, NCS has always been a feisty opponent, and this year would prove no different.

Game 1: W 25-18
The Maroon struggled from the service line, giving NCS 6 of their 18 points on missed serves. But Gray Shiverick '19Sidney Lewis '19, and Schuyler Moore '21 led the way on offense, and senior co-captain Taylor Redd '18 recorded 2 serving aces, allowing the team to shake off the nerves, and win the game.

Game 2: L 10-25
Whatever momentum EHS built in the first game dissipated with strong serving and middle attacks from NCS. Unfortunately, the Maroon succumbed to many self-inflicted errors and could not put together their defense and offense. Suffering from more errors than NCS, EHS knew game 3 would be crucial.

Game 3: W 25-15
Senior and veteran setter Valeria Carrion '18 carried the team in assists in game 3, as the Maroon stormed back with strong blocks and effective spikes.  Returning middle Mary Preston Singletary '20 tallied 3 kills and 2 blocks, co-captain Maggie Moore '19 added 1 kill, and Shiverick '19 notched 3 kills, 1 block, and 1 ace. Sophomore defensive specialist (libero) Elyse Farrell '20 took charge in the back row, digging hits and receiving serves from NCS; she also earned 2 aces with strong spot serves.

Game 4: L 19-25
EHS started off the fourth game sluggishly, and the Maroon found themselves in a deep hole. Sophomore setter Tallie Steiner '20 rotated into the game for EHS and served 10 straight points, as EHS mounted their comeback. She also notched 7 assists, with kills from Maggie Moore '19, freshman Carmela Ribadeneira '21ShiverickSingletary, and veteran OH/OPP senior Margot Yardley '18. Unfortunately, it was a little too late for the team, as NCS continued to set their strong middle. With scrappy play from NCS's defense, the Maroon couldn't put the ball down. Heading into the deciding fifth game, EHS strategized open areas of the court and came up with a game plan to win the match.

Game 5: W 15-7
With high energy, smiles, and a little bit of dancing on the court, EHS started game 5 slow but steady, holding close for the first four points of the game. NCS couldn't contain their own errors, and EHS jumped out to a 7-2 lead. M. Moore, Ribadeneira, Shiverick, and Yardley notched 8 of the 15 points on attack. Steiner and Redd split the assists evenly at 4 apiece. Try as they might, NCS could not handle the stellar offense from EHS, and the Maroon came away from Washington, D.C. victorious.
