The Rev. Canon Stephanie Spellers spent a week on campus sharing with the EHS community.
The Rev. Stephanie Spellers delivered Chapel Talks, attended classes, hosted discussions, and shared meals with the Episcopal High School community as part of the 2014-2015 Theologian-In-Residence program. The Theologian-In-Residence Program was established in 1993 through the generosity of Dick Rutledge ’51, in order to provide students with an opportunity to explore a foundation of faith.
Rev. Spellers began her week with Monday night’s Vespers service, and proceeded to spend the next three full days in classes on topics ranging from modern economics to protest literature.
“Our visiting Theologians are able to offer a real-world grounding to the work we do in the classrooms. When Rev. Spellers visited my Biblical Theology class, we were discussing the Early Christian Church and how they met and worshiped in member's homes. She shared how a return to this intimate and meaningful way of worship is present in the Episcopal Church today,” shares teacher, Louis Smith.
However, it is not just the students who benefit. Faculty members leverage her experience in reaching out to reflect on their own teaching.
“Listening to her listen and respond to students’ contributions in class opened my eyes to alternative and important ways of hearing and understanding conversations and ideas,” said Rev. Betsy Gonzales.
The Rev. Spellers’ full week came to a close on Friday.
