Writing Workshop: Essay Reading

Last week, students gathered in the Chapel for a student essay reading. Two students per Writing Workshop were chosen to read, including Katie Burnham '16, Ellie Halm '16, Georgia Hough '16, Joseph Lin '16, Hayley McGhee '16, Matt Renaud '15, Sarah Thomas '16, and Lydia Webster '16. Students argued points, plumbed the depths of meaningful moments, and connected with the audience as they moved through their well-crafted essays.
Below are excerpts from the evening:
"Gaming Is Good" by Joseph Lin '16
We could only complain about time flying by too fast when we finally got on the plane at midnight. The game talk continued throughout the flight and continues to today. Because of World of Warcraft, a lasting friendship had been easily built. Online games help shorten the physical distance between friends since my character in the game stands about one centimeter away from my friends’ characters. Doing quests together, fighting monsters together, it feels just like my friends are by my side. Friendships are easily preserved this way.
"One Last Swim" by Lydia Webster '16
To me, knowing how to swim has been more of a blessing than just another hobby. Growing up, swimming consumed my entire life. There was almost never a day when I was not completely underwater, dressed in a swimsuit and my favorite lime green goggles. I explored every inch of the pool from one end to the other and yet, I found a new interest under the water every day.
