William Ruffin Cox III '71

Mr. Cox was a stellar two-sport athlete at EHS. He was selected All-Prep in football both his junior and senior years. He was also selected for the All-Met and All-State teams as a senior, the year he led the Maroon team to an 8-1 record. Perhaps the highlight of that very successful season for him personally was scoring three touchdowns in the victory over Woodberry. Mr. Cox was co-captain of the track team his senior year. He won the Beaudric L. Howell Award for track both his junior and senior years and was selected to the All-Met, All-Alexandria, All-Prep, and All-State teams in track his junior and senior years. He set School records in the long jump, triple jump, 70-yard high hurdles, and 330-yard intermediate hurdles and was the
leading scorer on three State Championship teams. The Alexandria Sportsman's Club voted him Athlete of the Year in 1971.
Off the track, Mr. Cox served as a Monitor and member of the Honor Committee. At Amherst he played football and served as captain of the rugby
team. He was an English teacher at EHS in the 1970s.
