Percival Hunter Faulconer, Jr. ’57

At Episcopal, Mr. Faulconer was a stand-out on the football, tennis, and track and field teams. However, he also led the student body as a Senior Monitor and member of the Honor Committee, “E” Club, and Advisory Board.
Mr. Faulconer captained the varsity football team and was a four-year starter. He set School records for most touchdowns and most rushing yards gained in a season, and he earned All-Met and All-American honors. Mr. Faulconer beat Woodberry for four straight years, and he scored all 19 of the points earned in the 19-6 victory over the highly favored Wakefield High School. As a senior, he received the Jack Buchanan Award for Football and was named as The Washington Post’s Football Player of the Year in 1957.
“Whispers” wrote of Mr. Faulconer: “The third reason for the team’s winning record was its captain, an All-American, All-Metropolitan selection, Hunter Faulconer. E.H.S. does not specialize in individual stars, but in team effort; however, Hunter did stand out as the big gun of this year’s eleven. As a captain he provided the leadership that a team must have to win ball games. Also as a player Hunter had no peer. The records that he set cannot be counted on one hand, and it will be many a year before these records are broken.”
He also captained the tennis team for two years and was the No. 1 singles player in his senior year; Mr. Faulconer received the George Edmund Bradford Award for Tennis. He went on to study at the University of Virginia, where he unfortunately suffered a career-ending injury. His grandson, Hunter Faulconer, continues the family tradition of athletic success at Woodberry Forest School; he scored a touchdown against EHS in The 110th Game.
