George Dudley Morton '23

“The best all-round athlete that The High School has ever produced" is the way George Morton's classmates described him in the 1923 Whispers. Mr. Morton was one of the most valuable players on four teams - football, baseball, track and basketball - and was considered by many as a mainstay of each team. With Hall Trapnell, he was a key member of one of Episcopal's greatest undefeated football teams. He had an uncanny ability on the basketball court "to be all over the floor at the same time, dribbling cleverly, passing quickly and shooting accurately." He was one of only a few boys who earned a letter in four sports during the 1920s, the epitome of athletic achievement at EHS.
Not to be outdone by his own athletic skill, Mr. Morton also distinguished himself off the playing fields. He was elected Head Monitor in 1922 and Valedictorian in 1923.
From EHS, Mr. Morton took his athletic prowess to the University of Georgia. There, too, he was a mainstay of the football team, and his teammates elected him captain of the 1926 football team. He was named as an AllAmerican that same year.
Mr. Morton was a registered representative of the F. I. duPont Co. He died in 1968. Mr. Morton is being inducted into the EHS Athletic Hall of Fame posthumously.
