"In every phase of football Goodwin was perfection,” reported a 1938 “Whispers” editor. An extraordinary athlete and leader, the “Red Grange of EHS” led the varsity football team to undefeated seasons both his junior and senior years. He was selected to the All-State team both years, voted “Best Football Player” by the student body, and presented the football graduation award.
Mr. Goodwin’s athleticism extended beyond the football field, as he brought his competitive drive to basketball games and track and field events. He was a remarkable discus and javelin thrower who led his junior and senior teams to State Meet Championships and was appointed alternate captain of the basketball team his senior year. Mr. Goodwin’s dedication and spirit was invaluable to our Episcopal teams; he never lost to Woodberry in any sport.
