Softbal Team Defeats St. Andrews

The girls' varsity softball team had a big 30-14 win against St. Andrew’s on Thursday, to bring their record to 5-0 in the division.

The girls came out strong offensively in the first inning against St. Andrews and scored 3 runs. Lead-off hitter and co-captain, Hadiyyah Abdul-Jalaal ’17 started the game with a perfectly placed bunt to get her on base and then used her speed to steal second and third base. Then Madi Register ’18 singled to right field to score Abdul-Jalaal for the first run of the game. Judy Liu ’18 also had a nice hit to centerfield in the first inning, which scored 2 runs. Unfortunately, St. Andrews then managed to score 7 runs because of a few well-placed hits and several walks. Defensive highlights in the bottom of the inning were catcher Abdul-Jalaal’s perfect throw to second to pick off a steal, and when Tiffany Stowers ’20 struck out 2 of the 3 batters faced after she came in to pitch at the end of the firstinning.

In the next 3 innings, Episcopal would score 27 runs by being selective at the plate and hitting the ball extremely well. Hitting highlights include Lauryn King’s ’17 awesome lead-off home run in the second inning and Stowers’ ’20 huge over-the-fence home run in the third inning, to score 3 runs. Also impressive were Liu’s four RBIs and Stowers’ five RIBs for the game. Stowers and King lead the team with 2 home runs each. Stowers is also the team leader in RBIs, with 17 so far this season, and King leads the team with 3 triples so far this season.

In the 4th inning, several substitutions were made in the line-up. Maya Loehr ’19Karla Dominguez ’20Natasha Wanjiru ’20Allison Duenas ’20Nora Stanko ’19, and Charlotte Joyner ’20 were each given a turn in the lineup. Many of these players are used to playing in JV level games, but proved their worth at the Varisty level when every single one of them got on base from a hit, a walk, or from being hit by a pitch (with seam marks on her arm to prove it!), and scored a run. At the end of the fourth inning, Episcopal had an amazing 30 runs on the board.
