Girls’ crew slopped through the rain on Saturday at the Ted Phoenix Regatta. The novice eight, racing for only the second time of the season, posted the highlight of the day. This crew, who sat in a boat for only the first time one month ago, can now describe what it is like to battle a couple crews side by side for 1500 meters. EHS rowed an aggressive rating and found themselves racing with the crews from James Madison and Woodbridge. The crew was able to row the entire length of the course with no technical mishaps and placed a respectable 4th in the race. The amount of improvement these young rowers showed on Saturday has the coaching staff extremely excited about the remaining two races of the season.
EHS also sent out two other boats to the starting line - first four and junior four. Both crews placed 4th in their heat, missing a top three finish, which would have sent them into the finals. The junior four put forth a solid effort, but their high stroke rating got them out of rhythm. To their credit, the junior four clearly drew the tougher of the heats.
The first four rowed a more conservative race, which allowed them to close the gap on 3rd place during the sprint. Finishing about one boat length behind a qualifying position, the first four are in striking distance of the upper half of the league. It is evident that both boats have the ability to generate boat speed. During practice this week, the team will be working on finding the threshold where boat speed is being maximized without running into red zone.
