Track & Field Strong Throughout Season

523 ENTRANTS AND 74 EVENTS IN 3 HOURS AND 10 MINUTES
The Maroon Track & Field team took to Cathcart track again in 2017, hosting the EHS Winter Invitational. This particular competition has been a unique one for many years, as all the competing schools are able to enter the maximum amount of student-athletes in each event. 523 entries and 74 events later the EHS team put up a record number of personal bests and formidable debut’s. Special thanks to the manager staff and student support crew that ensured that this could all happen before light’s out.

EHS SPRINT DOMINANCE
Sam Kamara’19 was the fastest runner on the day taking 1st place in the 55-meter dash and the 300-meter dash in personal best times. His 55-meter time plants him firmly in the Top-10 Virginia Independent School rankings, where 100th’s of a second separate the top competitors in the State. Litchfield Ajavon ‘19 kept his unbeaten streak alive in the 55-meter hurdles and is rounding into his best form after an All-State season in 2016. Bijee Jackson ‘18, after winning the Shot Put event stepped onto the track and kept her unbeaten streak alive in 55-meter hurdles as well, taking first place with a personal best time. Jackson’s close companion and training partner Dawn Farquharson ‘18 raced to personal best times in the 55-hurdles and 300-meter races to continue her run of top form.

TRADITION IS STILL STRONG
The Shot put events are traditionally a strength for The Maroon as the legend of Ed Rice still lingers in the EHS program. Grant Neagli ‘17 had his farthest throw of his career to win his first high school competition and teammate Bijee Jackson ‘18 stepped into the circle as well to compete in the event for the first time and took top spot.

DISTANCE SQUAD FINISH STRONG
The EHS distance squad put in some quality laps on Cathcart Track led by Abigael Ajuma’s ‘17 and Alexanne Penton’s ‘19 BIG personal record performances in the 1600-meter race, after some formidable training sessions over the past 9 days. Thanos Androus ‘19 had the top 800-split on the day for the distance squad after a very busy week and Charlotte Breckenridge ‘20 posted a huge breakthrough in the 800-meters racing on the 4x8 with teammates Camden Alford ‘17, Taylor Redd ‘18 and Belle Dixon ‘18.   Following up Androus strong performance was Whit Shelburne ‘18 who stepped back on the track after a short hiatus from some injury issues and matched his best time of the season. The boys 1600-meter race was a huge hit as Coach Palmisano’s warriors all raced to personal best times for the indoor season. Ben Korkowski ‘19, Rohan Candadai ‘18 Rob Deaton ‘20 and Jerry Chen ‘19 all had strong performances for the Maroon in the closely contested 1600m-races.

This meet was also a great chance for many on this year’s team to debut for the Maroon & Black. Some top performers in their first competition included:
