On Tuesday, Maroon squared off against National Cathedral. With a heartbreaking loss in overtime last season, the team was ready for redemption and prepared to take on the Eagles.
The game started off slow for the Maroon. The Eagles’ early pressure made it difficult for the team to get passes off quickly and find the easy options. After a couple of minutes Maroon started to get back in their rhythm and was able to have opportunities on goal, with forwards Bijee Jackson '18 and Aly Cowin '18 having early chances. With Erin Phillips '18 and Janie Stillwell '18 in the central midfield they helped create the two corners of the first half.
The Eagles were able to create opportunities as well, with multiple shots on a goal and a corner in the first half. With goalie Camille Ciolino '17 back to make the stops they would not score. Her impressive saves and hard work earned her Player of the Game. With missed opportunities by both teams the half would end scoreless.
EHS started the second half strong with a few improvements from the first half, the team did a better job finding the quick passes and moving together. Three minutes into the half, Eleanor Winants '18 took a free hit from the 25 yard line where she was able to dribble into the circle, shoot and score. Maroon was on top, 1-0.
The team continued to work together, transferring the ball and making passes up the sideline. Defender Maddie Korkowski '17 did an awesome job stepping to the ball and making tackles down the sideline. Maroon was outstanding at creating opportunities in the circle, with players LizaBanks Campagna '17, Camden Alford '17, Winants, and Phillips taking shots and helping to force four corners.
The Maroon had one of the best attacking half’s of the season and it was impressive to watch. With the clock ticking down, Maroon would beat the Eagles, the final score 1-0.
