Dear Members of the EHS Community,
It is our honor and distinct pleasure to announce that at a special meeting on June 10, 2015, the Board of Trustees unanimously appointed Charles M. Stillwell to serve as the 12th Head of Episcopal High School. This appointment, effective July 1, 2016, is the result of an exhaustive national search in which Charley clearly distinguished himself from an expansive pool of highly qualified candidates. He is a proven leader of deep moral character and inspiring intellect, with a passion for educational excellence. Sharing both the values and ambitions that our community holds dear, Charley is ideally suited to build upon the great legacy of The High School.
Charley received his B.A. with honors in American History from Princeton University and his M.A., also in American History, from Brown University. He has worked in schools for 30 years, both boarding and day, as a teacher, coach, dorm head, and administrator. Charley will come to EHS following 18 years as Headmaster of St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, Va., where he has enhanced and expanded virtually all areas of program. Under his innovative leadership, he has connected the school to local, national, and global communities, while also increasing diversity and strengthening the school’s financial standing. A recognized leader, Charley has served as the President of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools, on the Board of the Mid-Atlantic Episcopal School Association, and is a member of the Executive Committee of The Headmasters Association.
Throughout the search process, we have been grateful for the guidance provided by the greater EHS community. Our alumni, faculty, and parents have made it clear that our next Head must honor the School’s history and unique traditions while inspiring innovative growth. Over the course of Charley’s career, he has continually pursued academic excellence and new program development, but he has also demonstrated a commitment to character education, leadership, and service. He sees the relationships between students and faculty as key to maximizing intellectual potential and instilling high ethical standards. In his educational philosophy, Charley wrote:
“Ultimately, an outstanding school prepares its students to seek not just impressive academic success in college and beyond but lives of true impact and purpose. It encompasses a mix of powerful relationships and learning experiences that inspire the students to pursue challenging goals and to be their best selves.”
When Charley comes to EHS, he will take the helm of a remarkably sound institution thanks to the dedication of Rob Hershey and those who came before him. We thank Rob for the extraordinary leadership he will continue to provide in the coming year, and we thank our devoted community for its guidance and patience throughout the search process. On July 1, 2016, we will know that our beloved School remains in wise and capable hands, confident that our fundamental values will continue to guide us boldly forward.
God Bless The High School!
Sincerely,
Bailey W. Patrick ’79
