Varsity Volleyball Wins ISL A Tournament

Varsity volleyball wins the ISL A division and tournament title, first time since 2008!

With an emotional victory on Friday afternoon behind them, the Maroon refocused their energy on a brisk Sunday afternoon to their second and final match up with National Cathedral School. The first time EHS faced NCS, they were without middle hitter Nikki Habina, who was out sick. With the blocking and hitting skills of Habina back on the court, EHS felt confident that another victory was in sight. NCS, however, had other thoughts. Both EHS and NCS played 5-game matches on Friday night, and both teams were ready to rumble at 1PM.

EHS came blazing out of the gate, quickly putting away NCS 25-13. With 12 points coming from kill shots, EHS had the upper hand offensively. NCS has some solid hitters, but EHS was able to dig their hits, feeding off the energy from the entire community. Habina (1), Halle Hughes (2), Maggie Moore (5), Emily Mears (1), and Margot Yardley (3) all contributed kills offensively, showing a diverse offense at the net. Allowing the offense to run smoothly, Hughes (7), Moore (7), Maura Kitchens (6), Kathryn Lewis (2), and Yardley (6) passed nearly flawless balls to setter Madeline Dolan.

Game 2 seemed like NCS settled into their offensive rhythm, adjusting to EHS' strong attacks and mounting their own well-placed shots in return. Behind Dolan's 10 assists, EHS was able to come out victorious once again, 25-23. Strong net play from Moore and Habina slowed down a lot of NCS' attacks, and our defense was able to pick up tips and tricky shots, never giving up on a ball. Leading the charge offensively in this game were Hughes and Yardley with a combined 11 kills.

In game 3, NCS took control. It was a "win or go home" situation, and they played well and fought hard to win the game 25-21. Though Habina, Moore, Mears, and Yardley were able to contribute kills to the overall count of 8, NCS' defense was too much for the Maroon to overcome. Hughes began the comeback, notching 4 aces in the game, but the Maroon succumbed to NCS' powerful play.

While game 4 was back and forth through 15 points, EHS could feel the victory coming. EHS never looked back, leaving NCS with 17 points to their 25 and winning the banner for the first time since 2008. Highlights from this game include kills from Hughes (3), Moore (4), Mears (1), and Yardley (2). Blocks at the net from both Habina (1) and Moore (2) kept the chaos on NCS's side, and digs from Taylor Redd (4), Dolan (3), Hughes (4), Habina (1), and Kitchens (7) allowed the offense to overpower NCS.

The varsity volleyball team, coaches, and manager would like to thank the EHS community for their phenomenal support throughout the season. Thank you to the Cheerleaders for organizing a fantastic fan section with face paint, enthusiastic cheering, and court rushing. Finally, thank you to our 3 senior captains Nikki Habina, Kathryn (KK) Lewis, and Maura Kitchens. Their leadership and commitment to the team on and off the court have been influential and impressive throughout the season, and we will miss their positive presence next year.
