Science Olympiad Excels at Northern Virginia Regionals
The EHS team competed against 23 other teams in 19 events across all areas of science and engineering, earning accolades and an invitation to the State Tournament.
On the first day of Spring Break, EHS was represented by two teams of students at the Northern Virginia Science Olympiad Regionals at Fairfax High School. Competing against 23 other teams in 19 events across all areas of science and engineering, the team had a fantastic showing and we have been extended an invitation to the State Tournament in April. This was the first time that EHS has taken two teams to the competition, and the competitors' efforts were exceptional.
Highlights include:
The powerhouse team of Nai Pitibhabhong ’16 and Erin Zhang ’17 earned a gold medal in the highly-competitive Cell Biology event. Zhang was the revelation of the season, as the only team member to medal in every event in which she competed. Zhang partnered with captain Leah Joo ’16 to also win a silver in Chemistry Lab, and a 6th place medal with Dylan Michael ’16 for their balsa airplane in the Wright Stuff competition.
Co-captains Joo and Joseph Lin ’16 teamed up with Maura Kitchens ’16 to earn a silver in Experimental Design. In this event, students are provided with materials and they must make up an experiment on the spot and write a complete laboratory report, complete with statistical data. Kitchens volunteered her time to the team for the second year in a row and also brought home a silver with Layne Berry ’16 in Green Generation, an ecology event.
Construction specialist Lin partnered with Alex Allahar ’19 to win bronze for their outstanding Electric Vehicle. Returning Olympians Eric Koo ’17 and Amy Lim ’17 also fared strongly in a construction event, building a fully-geared clock out of K’Nex and earning 5th place medals for It’s About Time.
We are very grateful to Mr. Hodge and Mr. Chesson, who chaperoned the teams and volunteered at the tournament while I was acting as an Event Supervisor. We now look forward to our State tournament on April 16 at the University of Virginia.
