Mark E. Gowin

Mark Gowin joined the faculty at Episcopal in 1988 and had an incredible impact on countless student-athletes while serving as a dean of students, athletic director, and coach of football and baseball.

In 24 years at the helm of The High School’s football team, he amassed well over 100 victories, including a winning record versus Woodberry. He coached the team to undefeated seasons in 1991, 1992, and, 1998, one-loss seasons in 1989 and 1996, and a total of four IAC championships. Gowin was chosen as the Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year, the Touchdown Club of Washington Coach of the Year, and the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club Coach of the Year.

Gowin also served as the head baseball coach for several years and led Episcopal to its only IAC baseball title in 1996, a championship that he shared with his son Brian, who was a key player on that team.

During Coach Gowin’s stewardship of the Athletics Department at Episcopal, the school won six state championships, seven IAC championships, and 10 ISL championships.

Coach Gowin always placed a premium on relationships and the way he treated student-athletes and his fellow coaches at Episcopal. Of his father, Brian said, “He made sure one thing was constant, his family, players, and coaches were always his priority.”

Former NFL player Tim Hightower ’04 said, "Coach Gowin, you made sure football was bigger than X’s and O’s through the life lessons you taught and you made everyone who played for you feel like part of a family.”
