‘Twas the last game of soccer, and spirits were high;
No loss could deplete them, not even a tie.
The Maroon were still standing, proclaiming all well,
E’en after Thursday to Madeira they fell.
The final game played, it ended nil-four,
But the season for Joccer went down in school lore.
They arrived on the campus, all the way at Madeira,
Amid fans dressed in red, who were ready to cheer, “Ah!”
By the stables and horses, the field was all lumpy,
But the fighting High School-ers refused to be grumpy.
An early goal came on a defensive miss,
But the rest of the first half was nothing but bliss.
Stalwarts Emma and Soph through their inj’ries did play,
And without contacts, Bibs saw so little all day.
Bella proved she was fearless, caring not for her size,
She did all she could to push us towards the prize.
All our speed came from GiGi and Chloe and Nat,
They just ran and they ran and refused to fall flat.
Meg and Covie defended, with their famous kick toes,
Louise held down middie, flashing great give-and-goes.
When the half-whistle blew the Maroon trailed by one,
And they knew that this game was oh so far from done.
In the huddle we shared what we knew to be true,
That the High School had clearly the far better crew.
Kate and Cher managed, and tracked all the time,
But the team was aware it would be quite a climb.
When the Snails took the ball at the top of next half,
The Maroon knew they couldn’t afford e’en one gaffe.
The attack was best led by our goal-scorer Bruns,
She took corners and shots-on-goal, all off great runs.
Bianca switched up to midfield, she rose to the task,
In the glory of Aerin’s sharp shots we just bask.
When some time had gone past, and the Snails fast scored twice,
The Maroon were down three-zip, but their blood flowed with ice.
Lara Georgia brought energy, guidance, and fun,
By the time she got subbed out, we all said, “Well done!”
Ruby stepped up from goal-line, she sure did seem brave,
And her fingers afforded a sweet crossbar save.
Sydney sparked some strong offense and ignored the talk,
When the Snails got to chirping we knew just to walk.
One last goal came in with a minute to go,
For a team with less moxie, ‘twould have been quite a blow.
But the fighting Maroon are not easily cowed,
When the game at last ended, they still could be proud.
On the merry ride home, the team proved their strong bond,
They have fought hard together, and all grown quite fond
Of this group they have forged, that aced many a test,
For no matter our record, we still are the best.
The coaches are grateful for all their strong play,
With one week left together, we’ll treasure each day,
But we’ll always remember, ‘twill come as no shocker,
The dream season we had, with girls’ JV soccer.
