It was deja vu all over again as the EHS girls’ JV soccer team suffered another tough 0-1 defeat to Eleanor Roosevelt High School, this time on an ominous, gloomy day in Greenbelt, Maryland. The Maroon were not deterred by the hour of traffic they had to sit through on the way to the game, nor by the late arrival giving them only ten minutes to rush through a warmup. The weather gods seemed to know the stakes of this grudge match, holding off on the forecast of heavy thunderstorms to enable the teams to battle it out under the lights on the Roosevelt turf field.
After a scoreless first half, the home crowd gathered under the haze experienced a rollercoaster of emotions with 25 minutes left in the second half: an apparent Raider goal caused the stands to erupt in cheers, until they realized that the referee was holding up his arms in an X to indicate that the goal-scorer had been ruled offsides and the goal would not count.
Chloe Cha ‘25 made several brave attempts deep in Raider territory in the first half, Louise Tucker ‘24 ripped a powerful shot on goal with thirteen minutes left in the second half, and Caroline Bruns ‘25 added a last-ditch effort to strike through the Raider defense with just a minute remaining in the game, but none of the Maroon players could quite find the back of the net. The lone Roosevelt goal came with twelve minutes left in the second half on a counter-attack from the above-mentioned Tucker shot.
Tucker solidified her place as a stalwart midfielder by making plays all over the field for the Maroon, and Bibs Riddell ‘23 and Sophia Appiah ‘25 proved themselves indispensable once again by delivering stops from their anchor positions as center midfielder and sweeper, respectively. Emma Walker ‘23 returned from injury to drive the Maroon attack, including launching one of the team’s best scoring chances via a corner kick midway through the second half.
As always, the team spent no time wallowing in sorrow, choosing instead to pick each other up and focus on the positives from another close loss.
