Varsity Golf Takes on St. Albans, Georgetown Prep

By Coach Matt Fitzgerald

On Monday, April 26, the varsity golf team traveled to Argyle Country Club in Silver Spring, Md., to take on the St. Albans Bulldogs in a 9-hole stroke play IAC match.  Representing Episcopal were Beck Goode '21, Justin Yi '21, Thomas Dudley '21, Patrick Weston '22, Anne Griffin '22, and Steven Lilly '23.  Conditions for the match were ideal — sunny skies and warm temperatures. In IAC matches, both teams play six golfers and count the low five scores.

The team had a goal of shooting under 225, which would be an 11-shot improvement over our best team competitive score to date. We accomplished this with low rounds led by Beck Goode '21, who shot a 40, and Anne Griffin '22, who carded a 42. Of note, Anne is required to play from the same tees as the boys, according to IAC rules, which makes her scores even more impressive. Steven Lilly '23 also contributed a 43, which helped the team considerably with some spectacular scrambling around the greens. The Episcopal team scored a 217, meeting our team goal, but not enough to best St Albans at 201. The medalist for the round was sophomore Grant Lester of St. Albans, who shot a 35 at his home course.

Last week the Episcopal squad played Georgetown Prep at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md. Woodmont was home to the 2020 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, and it was a treat for the team to play this exceptional course. Representing Episcopal were Beck Goode '21, Justin Yi '21, Townes Hunt '22, Patrick Weston '22, Anne Griffin '22, and Teddy Janedis '23.  The day proved to challenging for the Maroon, as the Hoyas handled the demanding course in stride and won the match 201-241. The low round for Episcopal was turned in by Patrick Weston '22, who shot 43.
