The Maroon Track & Field team had a short turn around from their last meet with Cathcart track hosting 10 schools on Thursday before EHS broke for Mid-Winter break. This meet was a chance for many of the younger members of the team to have the privilege of wearing the Maroon & Black and competition and gain competitive experience.
The girls' 4x800-meter team got things kicked off with a strong showing, led by veteran Nelle Bashinsky '22 who led her three freshman teammates including a new personal record by Audrey Dearlove '23. Teammates Eliza Robbins '23 and Ella Marshall '23 also contributed to this relay.
The Maroon field event competitors had a strong day with Piers Luscombe '22 leaping to his all time best in the long jump and taking 1st place overall in the competition. Senior Ransdell McCauley '20, on the heels of learning the event for the first time leaped to a new personal best and good enough for 4th place. LucRichard Rameau '21 also had another strong showing in the shot put event, taking 1st place overall in the event for the third meet in a row. Caroline Panton '21 had a chance to fine tune her high jump before competing in the St. Christopher’s Invitational the next day and was the highest leaper of the day.
A few of the middle distance specialists dropped down to the 500-meter race and put their speed to good use. Senior Thanos Androus '20 ran a strong race to place 2nd overall in the 2.5-lap race. Androus was followed closely by teammate and training partner Edward Powers '21 who ran a huge personal best time. Kenny Driscoll '22 was the last of the trio to contest the 500-meter race and ran a season’s-best time. Freshman Eva Wadley '23 debuted in the 500-meter event as well.
The 300-meter race was a deep field for the Maroon, led by Victor Salcedo '22 who ran a personal best time and all-time top time for sophomores for Maroon Track & Field. Salcedo was followed closely by fellow newcomer and sophomore James Jacob '22, who got in valuable experience before being called into the quartet that would compete at the St. Christopher’s Invitational on Saturday. A string of personal bests for The Maroon were put in by Jack Dupuis '23, Ford Fitts '23, Johnny Barrett '21, Ward Lilly '22 and Van Ayvazian '22. Girls 300-meter runners also had a record day, led by the speedy Ruby Gregg '22 and newcomers Eleanor Cart '23, Lucy Whitaker '22, Caroline Holland '22 and Samatha Funkhouser '22.
