Varsity Basketball Team Wins Opening Game

The boys varsity basketball team hosted Hayfield High School in their first contest of the season. Hayfield is a local public school which has a strong history in their basketball program and a coaching staff that does a terrific job with their team. Episcopal had just finished three straight days of practice after a one-week holiday break, so the coaching staff was eager to see how the team would perform in their first game.

EHS was firing on all cylinders in the first quarter and a full-court trapping defense caused Hayfield to commit a few early turnovers. The Maroon led 21-12 after the first quarter, but the pace of play may have caused some fatigue in the second eight minutes of play. Defensive lapses allowed our opponents to score 17 points in the second period, but fortunately for Episcopal their offensive production matched the first quarter, scoring 21 points once again. At the half, EHS led 42-29.

After regrouping during the break, Episcopal set form goals of holding our opponents under 30 points in the second half, and scoring 40 or more. The team accomplished both of these goals, and all healthy players saw action in the second half of play. A balanced offensive attack with teammates sharing the ball allowed the Maroon to score 30 field goals in the game off 19 assists. The defense held strong throughout the game, holding our opponents to just 21 total field goals and forcing 21 turnovers. As the final buzzer sounded, EHS secured an opening victory with a final score of 80-54.
