After Thursday's tough loss to Holton-Arms, the team realized they needed to focus on defense, moving the ball up the sidelines, and crossing it in front of the goal to make shots. The girls put in the work during Friday's practice and it paid off when the Maroon faced off against Mercersburg on Saturday at home.
The team repeatedly moved the ball up the field into the offensive third and made a number of attempts on goal, executing the moves they had practiced on Friday. When Debby Lee '21 finally found the back of the net in the 16th minute of the game, the team was ecstatic. The combined efforts of the defense led by stopper Hannah Marshall '21, sweeper Cindy Wang '21, and keeper Banks Krause '23 prevented Mercersburg from scoring in the first half.
Due to off-campus commitments, the Maroon had started the game with a smaller roster than usual. This, combined with a few injuries in the first half, meant that the team would have no subs for the second half. Several players stepped up to try new positions. Mercersburg was able to capitalize on a moment of confusion to score off a long ball just 4 minutes into the second half. Determined to get their first win of the season, the Maroon fought back. Despite their tired legs, the team moved the ball down the sidelines and took a number of shots. Finally, with 10 minutes left in the half, Annie Caine '22 connected with a loose ball inside the 18 for a beautiful shot that arced over the keeper. The team played a smart and tenacious final 10 minutes of the game, holding Mercersburg off for the first victory of the year. The final score was 2-1.
