Maroon Hosts Winter Invitation, Sets Personal Records

The boys and girls track & field team had a quick turn around from their last meet in order to get in one more competition before the Mid-Winter Break.   The Maroon & Black welcomed 12 teams into Flippin Fieldhouse on Thursday January 24 for the EHS Winter Invite and had some encouraging performances.   A small contingent of student-athletes also ventured down to Richmond, VA as well to compete in the St Christopher’s Invitational.
Speed was the order of the day on Thursday, with Jamall Mensah ‘20 putting together his best race to date in the 55 meters (6.65) and taking 1st place in a new personal best time. Newcomer Ethan Yip ’21 emerged as one of the brightest elements of this year’s team—he had a busy day for the Maroon, starting off in the long jump, moving to the 55 meters (6.91) where he finished 7th overall in a personal best time then finished off his day with a scorching time in the 300 meters (37.69), earning him runner-up.

Sophomore standout Liza Gregory also had a strong day for the Maroon. She equaled her best time in the 800 meters (2:36) on the 4x800m team, and then debuted in the 1600 meter (5:48) where she ran a strong opening time that will improve throughout the season. A short time later she was called on to run on the 4x400m relay and ran a remarkable time (67.0) to lead the Episcopal team.

The boys 4x800-meter team took 1st place led by James Dixon ‘19 (2:07.2) who put in the top time of the season. Dixon was assisted by Thanos Androus ‘20, who had a breakthrough race running his all-time best time over four laps (2:08.1). Edward Powers ‘21 and Chris Denning ‘ 19 rounded out the winning squad.

Jeff Stallings ‘20 (40-7.5) took top spot in the shot put event for the second week in a row, over his training partner and teammate Parker Jenkins ‘20, who placed runner-up (38-9.5). Teammate David Zeng ‘20 (38-1.5) put together his best throw in his Maroon career to placed 4th overall as well.

Carmela Ribadeneira ‘21 had a career day in the high jump (4-6), adding two inches her all-time best in the event and placing runner-up. Several other student-athletes made personal records during the invitational: Nelle Bashinsky ‘22 knocked another second off of her best 800-meter time (2:49.6), Janil Cohen ‘21 went farther into the sand she had ever gone in the long jump event, and Lucy Monsted ‘22 had a strong debut in the 500-meter event.

The 300-meter event was a windfall of best times for the Maroon, led by team consummate senior leader Sydney Lewis ‘19, who ran her best time in the 300-meters (46.87) and brought Ruby Gregg ‘21 along with her into the personal record club (47.20). This event was the debut for a dozen competitors in Maroon & Black as well as many represented themselves well for the first time.
