Varsity Tennis Falls to Holton in ISL Championship

The girls varsity tennis team gathered themselves for what would certainly be another test of fortitude and pressure as they drove to Potoma, Md., for the ISL tournament championship.
The Holton squad had also won a tough match in the semifinals, so everyone was a bit anxious about the match. It was a blustery day, which would make for some interesting doubles matches, and as the match began, the team began battling once more. Senior captain Gracie Hughes '19 ran into a super tough opponent who has dominated conference play all year, and dropped her #1 singles match. Meanwhile, in the other singles, Lily Dolan '20 grabbed a quick lead at #4 while Lilly Schmachtenberger '19 and Lilly Whitner '19 fell behind at #2 and #3. These results would continue to change, as the #4 player from Holton fought back to secure a second point for Holton, and Whitner’s comeback bid at #3 fell a little short. Schmachtenberger came back, pulled herself together and won an intense 10-8 match.

The doubles were all very competitive, and our #3 team of Lucy Williams '20 and Eve Mazlish '21 started strong, got a big lead and watched it get closer until they closed it out 10-6. At #1 doubles, Nora Huffines '20 and Catherine Clark '21 continued their strong play with a convincing 10-3 win. That left the match at 3-3, with our #2 doubles team of Maddie Blalock '19 and Sam Fanning '19 in yet another dogfight. The lead changed several times, and finally the Maroon team found themselves down 7-9 with their backs against the wall. In what must have been a 25 minute game, the girls from the Holy Hill held off six match points to get back to 9-8, then won another long game to tie it at 9-9. Holton took a 10-9 lead and Blalock and Fanning held off more chances from Holton until they found themselves in another final tiebreak for the match. The tiebreak was another see saw battle where both teams fought back, but our girls came up just short, falling 7-5 in the tiebreak in a very close and hard-fought match.
