Girls Varsity Soccer Tops Holy Child on Senior Day
Over Family Weekend the girls varsity soccer team hosted non-divisional ISL opponent Holy Child on Bryant Field.
The game was the last regular-season home contest for a group of nine seniors that have collectively made an unrivaled impact on the EHS soccer program. Over the past four years, this group helped make EHS school history by winning the Maroon's first ISL-A division championship in 2016, and competed in the ISL's prestigious AA division for longer than any other group. Their outstanding work ethic extends beyond the field and into the classroom, leading EHS to national recognition by the United Soccer Coaches Association as one of its recipients of the High School Team Academic Award and is poised for recognition by the same governing body as a recipient of the Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award for the fall of 2018.
Despite again playing without key contributors Alli Boehm '20, Katherine Allen '20, and Noe Boggan '21, the Maroon proved early on that it was a force to contend with as seven seniors opened play for EHS and set the tone for the remainder of the contest. Despite initially struggling with off-side calls, EHS was eventually able to pick apart Holy Child's defense and generate an impressive 18 shots on the day. Sophomore Lucy Schmachtenberger '21 led the way for the Maroon with four shots on goal while Lindsey Harrison '19 tallied one on frame. Senior Kyara McDowell '19 ultimately capitalized on a late feed from Caroline Garrard '20 to give the team a 1-0 lead in the 73rd minute of play and a create a deficit for Holy Child from which the Tigers would never recover while senior goalkeepers Lindy Moss '19 and Olivia Morton '19 combined for the shutout in goal with seven and four saves respectively.
All 17 eligible players earned playing time in what was almost certainly the team's last competition of the year on Bryant Field. The team now stands 5-6-2 overall and looks forward to traveling to Sidwell Friends for its ISL-AA divisional quarter-final on Wednesday, October 31 at 3:30pm. At the same time, it awaits a final poll for the Northern Virginia Independent Schools Girls' Soccer Invitational (expected no later than November 4) in hopes of qualifying for the tournament as one of the top four out of nine teams in contention for an invitation to participate.
