The boys varsity soccer team travelled to Charlottesville on Tuesday afternoon and came away with a satisfying 2-0 victory over St. Anne’s Belfield on the strength of goals early in each half.
Playing on a small turf field due to the recent rains, the boys struggled with the fast surface and constrained space, but at times the team’s possession and attacking movements looked quite good.
Collin Hwang ’19, who played an excellent match as a central striker, opened the scoring with a vicious strike with barely three minutes played in the game. High pressure from the Maroon caused a turnover and Hwang smashed the ball home in the top right corner. Team defending was a huge key to Episcopal’s success, as the boys won the ball high up the pitch and an organized defense allowed only one shot throughout the match, and that was saved by Kidron Kollin ’19 in second half stoppage time.
Episcopal’s attack generated fourteen shots in the match with half on target, however many were straight at STAB’s keepers. As the match wore on, EHS became more accustomed to the small field and began attacking the flanks on the wings with good success. The second goal of the game came from an attack on the right side, and winger Thanos Androus ’20 did an excellent job cutting between defenders before slipping a pass to Sam Kamara ’19, who smashed the ball just inside the left post for the 2-0 lead.
While the remaining thirty-four minutes did not yield any additional goals, the team did execute several long passing sequences and a number of quality chances. Every available field player appeared in the game and contributed to a solid victory.
