Girls Crew Sees Success in Regatta

EHS Crew rowed in the Darrell Winslow Regatta on the Occoquan River on Saturday. Racing for their first time, the novice four had a successful day. In addition to the novice four, EHS raced in the first and second fours events.
Having only six hours of on-the-water training, the novice four rowed a complete race. They placed 4th out of five crews in their flight, but they clearly raced in the more competitive flight. During the novice year, rowers learn so much in a two-month period. This squad is tackling the steepest part of the learning curve and they still will continue to gain boat speed each week.

The first four put together a solid race, though they were unable to advance to the finals by placing 5th in the heat. The boat was able to apply the power at a lower stroke rating than their other competitors. The goal this week in practice will be to raise the stroke rating without sacrificing technique. The margin between EHS and the top crews should be reduced each week.

The highlight of the day belonged to the second four. The boat practiced only twice together and special recognition for the success of the day goes to Skye Jackson ‘21, who jumped into the final seat in the boat. After placing 2nd in the heat, the four earned a rematch with West Springfield in the finals. The winning margin in the finals was cut from 5.7 seconds in the heat to only 2.5 seconds in the finals. As the lead crews rowed past the grandstands in the final 250 meters, EHS was clearly closing the gap with first place. At the finish line, the boat earned a well rowed 2nd place finish.
