On Friday, the girls’ varsity squash team traveled to Richmond to play St. Catherine’s at the Country Club of Virginia. The match began with the six exhibition matches, which were played best two out of three.
Isabelle Holt ’18 (10), Lilly Schmactenberger ’19 (12), Colby Grover ’19 (13) and Lily Dolan ’20 (14) all won in decisive 2-0 matches. Margaret Collett ’18, who played at number 11, beat her opponent in an exciting 2-1 match.
The first three matches to take the court were all won in three games, as the top nine matches play best three out of five. Janie Stillwell '18, Trudy Holmes ’18 and Jonesy Wilbanks '19 won at numbers 9, 8, and 6 respectively. Up next on court was Lindsey Harrison '18, playing at number 5, who beat her St. Catherine’s opponent 3-1.
With four wins under their belts, the last five players took the court, knowing that only one of them would have to win her match to bring the victory home for the team. Unfortunately, all five of them, Lilly Whitner ’19, Sabrina Teope ’18, Mac Faughnan ’19, Karla Domingues ’20, and Nicole Carino ’19, were all defeated by strong St. Catherine’s players. Faughnan, playing at number 3, fell 3-0, while both Teope (4) and Carino (1) were able to get a game off of their opponents, finishing at 3-1.
Playing at number 7, Whitner had a challenging but well fought match, eventually loosing 3-2. After losing the first game 11-7, she came back to win the next two games 11-4, and 11-1. Her St. Catherine’s opponent was not willing to give up though, and she came back to win a well-played fourth game, 12-10. In this game both Whitner and her opponent fell multiple times, always getting back up to finish out the rally, showing a lot of grit and determination. It was a great showing of squash by both players, and St. Catherine’s eventually won in the fifth, 11-9.
Playing at number 2, Domingues also lost a close match 3-2. In the first game, she learned that this match was going to require both patience and stamina, as the players went back in forth until Domingues eventually won 17-15. She went on to lose the next two games 11-7 and 11-8. Although the long rallies in the first two games left both opponents exhausted, she pushed through and won the fourth game 14-12. Off-court her teammates gave her advice and encouragement to help her in the final game. Despite some incredible rallies, such as one in which Domingues fell twice and still won the point, she lost the fifth game 11-3.
