The EHS boys’ varsity soccer team traveled to Richmond on Friday afternoon where they were defeated 4-0 by the Collegiate Cougars.
In the early going it appeared that this would be a tightly contested affair in spite of a sluggish start by the EHS boys. Episcopal fired off the first shot on goal in the third minute with an effort by Jacob Beckner ’18 that was saved by the Cougars' keeper.
However, Collegiate scored the opening goal of the game in just the sixth minute when a midfielder picked up a giveaway by EHS and dribbled through the defense before slotting the ball into the corner from close range. EHS picked up their play midway through the first half, but several promising possessions fizzled due to poor decisions, or players being caught offside.
Collegiate took control of the game in the second half, as they continued to take advantage of mistakes by EHS players, scoring goals in the 45th, 54th, and 80th minutes of the game. As the team debriefed following the match, everyone agreed that the breakdowns that lead to goals conceded are all fixable. The team is noticing progress and the boys recommitted themselves to each other. The team’s next match is at home on Tuesday afternoon against Woodberry Forest.
