Girls Varsity Squash Wins First Round of MAST Tournament
The girls varsity squash team traveled to Mercersburg Academy to play in the Mid-Atlantic Squash Team Tournament, with six schools fielding strong teams.
Seeded #1 and #2, both EHS and St. Catherine’s received a bye in the Round of 8. EHS first squared off against host Mercersburg. The team’s 8-1 win propelled them into the championship round against St. Catherine’s. In another tight battle with several close individual matches, EHS lost 4-5 and secured the second place trophy.
In the Mercersburg match, Karla Domingues ’20 (#2), Mac Faughnan ’19 (#3), Sabrina Teope ’18 (#4), Lilly Whitner ’19 (#7), Trudy Holmes ’19 (#8), Margaret Collett ’18 (#9), and Isabelle Holt ’18 (#10) all won their matches 3-0. Playing at # 5, Lindsey Harrison ’19 lost a challenging match 3-0 against a strong Mercersburg player. Jonesy Wilbanks ’19 (#6) also played a close match, eventually winning 3-1. Nicole Carino ’19 (#1), had an exciting 3-2 win over her Mercersburg opponent. After going up 2-0 in the first two games, Mercersburg came back fighting and won the third and fourth game, sending the match into the fifth game. In the final game, Carino bounced back to win an exciting 14-12 game, sealing the strong victory over Mercersburg and sending the team into the championship finals against St. Catherine’s, which had just beaten Potomac in the other semi-finals.
